“Ishtara” is a 25″ x 30″ oil painting on 100% cotton gallery wrapped canvas. The painting depicts an Afro-Arab woman and was created as a study in contrast between a contemporary woman and old cultural elements that reside in her lineage. She stands in front of an ancient Islamic fresco with some of the details fading or chipped away. Depending on the viewer’s perspective, her modern garb and the state of the fresco can represent a choice to part with more traditional tenants of her faith, or the choice of a modern person to explore their cultural background.
